Travel options for Cape Town, South Africa

Travel options in South Africa are relatively limited, but it's worth knowing what's available so you can plan your holiday. In addition to renting a campervan here are some other options that travellers may wish to consider.

Public transport in Cape Town is expanding and improving all the time. The team at Lekker Cape use local taxis, buses and trains to collect campervans and drop off campervans from customers. Its a cheap & quite environmentally friendly way to get around, but just takes a long time and isn't always reliable. Just bear this in mind if you've got a plane to catch - we've been caught out before and it's not funny!

Local taxis are cheap (expect to pay between R5 and R15 per journey), but most certainly not luxurious and often not safe. The government has been working hard to improve safety standards over the years and there has certainly been a noticeable improvement. However, there's still a long way to go to bring it to an acceptable service. Meanwhile, expect an overcrowded vehicle (often a 10 seater Toyota Quantum, that is seating 16 with bags of shopping and childrens on laps!) However, for short trips it is the only public transport option available except for private taxis. Private taxis are on the up in South Africa. Make sure to check out the rate per km (currently R12 p/km in central Cape Town) and use a reputable company.

There is a good and modern bus service in operation in Cape Town which can take you from the Cape Town International airport to Cape Town city relatively cheaply and there's an expanding public bus network around the central city. You can also take a Cape Town city tour either with the other tourists or in your campervan which is highly recommended. If you take a camper then you can spend as long as you like at each main tourist attraction. You can also enjoy the sights without a bus load of people in your view or photo!

For further out in the suburbs you'll need to hop on a train. It's not deluxe travel, but it does get you from a to b cheaply and is safe to use during the daylight, especially during commuter traffic. Once at your arrival town the challenge is always to get to your destination as taxis aren't waiting at the suburbian train stations. Best to book a taxi in advance or get a lift from someone you know.

For long distances there are a number of coach services in operation including Greyhound, Translux and Intercape. You can check routes, availability and book online. This is a cheap way to get from one major city to another major city. For example Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. The challenge is alwasy what to do once you get there. You may choose to rent a campervan which will be delivered directly to you at your destination. This is a good option if you are limited for time and only want to travel one way.

We still think that sure you could take the bus, coach or the train, but then you're at the mercy of timetables and availability. The best way to get around and explore South Africa is with a campervan.
